Products described as “compost” do not all serve the same purpose. Start with the intended use printed on the bag.
- Check the purpose. A seed-sowing medium, a container potting mix and a garden soil improver are different products.
- Match your project. Choose a medium intended for your plant and growing method.
- Check the pack details. Compare stated volume, weight and ingredients. Weight and volume are different measurements; a litre estimate cannot be converted to kilograms without knowing the material’s density.
- Read any feeding information. Check whether nutrients are included before deciding what additional feed, if any, is appropriate.
